The Sensible Rant #3: What Did We Do Before Ninety Two?

I sometimes wonder what life was like before Football was invented in 1992…

I seem to remember that SKY was something above our heads…

20120927-230927.jpg

A ‘Super Sunday’ involved having a leg of lamb instead of a roast chicken…

20120927-231027.jpg

Richard Keys was a hairy handed bloke who sat on the brightly coloured TVam sofa while watching a lady called Lizzy jump up and down *That might explain a thing or two*…

20120927-231131.jpg

Murdoch was a ‘Howling Mad’ soldier of fortune and didn’t own a newspaper, although he was still wanted by the government but for entirely different reasons…

20120927-231223.jpg

LA Galaxy was a French chocolate bar and Becks was an expensive beer…

20120927-231319.jpg

20120927-231406.jpg

Ronaldo was the name of the bloke who owned the Italian restaurant on the high street…

20120927-231444.jpg

Messi was what you’d call Den & Angie’s divorce…

20120927-231526.jpg

Assist was something you’d go to see your doctor about…

[You really don’t want to see a picture of a cyst!]

A Sheikh was something you’d do vigorously to a bottle of Heinz ketchup…

20120927-231650.jpg

…well that’s about it really…

…oh I forgot, we had the Beautiful Game and we got to see and appreciate wonderful teams in their pomp…

Well before my time, but no doubt some will remember the pleasure of watching the great Juventus side of the 1930’s…

20120927-232008.jpg

After the second world war the Torino side of the 1940’s dominated Italian and European football…

20120927-232047.jpg

Then as we entered the 1950’s more familiar names started to appear, such as AC Milan, Real Madrid & Barcelona, but what about Stade Reims, surely they deserve a mention too…

20120927-232326.jpg

In the swigging 60’s more big teams started to flex their muscles, including Leeds United, Manchester United, Celtic, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Benfica & Ajax, but who would believe that Tottenham Hotspur sported a great team in this decade too…

20120927-232507.jpg

Now in the 1970’s the likes of Juventus, Liverpool and Bayern Munich dominated proceedings, but don’t forget Feyenoord, Borussia Monchengladbach, St Etienne and Nottingham Forest (Yes, you read that correctly!)…

20120927-232720.jpg

The 1980’s was jam packed full of terrific teams like FC Porto, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool, AC Milan and Juventus, however there were also long forgotten greats such as Steaua Bucharest, Red Star Belgrade, Marseille, PSV Eindhoven and Hamburg…

20120927-232852.jpg

…let’s not forget the players too…

I’ll see your Ronaldo with a Cruyff and raise you a Garrincha…

20120927-233335.jpg

You can keep your Messi, I’d pick Maradona in my team…

20120927-233430.jpg

Ibrahimovic? Torres? Drogba? Van Persie? wouldn’t be fit to lace the boots of Di Stéfano…

20120927-233510.jpg

The youngsters love Rooney, but would he have been picked in front of Eusébio or Pelé? We all know the answer to that…

20120927-233613.jpg

How about Xavi & his mate Iniesta? Great players but would look tame in comparison with Beckenbauer…

20120927-233654.jpg

So if you ask me, if you believe football started in 1992 then quite frankly you don’t know you are born!
